Backpackers enjoy coming to the Ho Chi Minh City because it is more affordable and convenient in many ways.

Bui Vien, Pham Ngu Lao neighborhood

Many among backpackers go to Pham Ngu Lao. If you are coming from the airport, it is not necessary to get a private car. You can simply jump on a bus and go to the bus stop near the Ben Thanh Market. When you are already on the market, you will just need to walk and you will reach the backpacker street, such as Pham Ngu Lao. If you will arrive the airport at night, do not just get any taxi if you are going to a particular place, make sure that the taxi is from a reputable taxi company.

Bui Vien neighborhood

You do not need to stay in a luxurious hotel because there are many affordable hotels in the Ho Chi Minh City, which you can find along the streets of Pham Ngu Lao, in the Bui Vien and in the De Tham Street. The rooms from the hotels in these streets will just cost you 10 to 15 USD every night. It is not that cheap because it is fully air-conditioned, have television, hot water and with a free Wi-Fi.
